about

Released as a cassette in 1989, This collection capsulizes a period in time of songwriter Dan Haley. Living in Portland, OR. while regrouping his wierd/pop/rock band, Ed & The Boats, Haley recorded in a hurry on a Fostex 4 Track machine in his bedroom. Inspired by Todd Rundgren, Emitt Rhodes, T-Rex's "Unicorn" and Lester Bangs' collection of rock music essays "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung", the window was open to throw everything on hand together and create a ragged yet cohesive whole. Levels were peaked, rules were broken. Some vocals were sent through a guitar distortion pedal called a Rat to saturate the tape with signal. Wrong, perhaps but to make an omelette, you have to break some eggs.

Haley moved to Vermont in 2000 and in 2007 had this under-underground Portland cult classic re-mastered and transfered to digital.

Still in Vermont, Haley performs under the name Dan Haley Is Mr. Casual in tribute to the recording that first captured the sounds from his mind's ear.

about

Dan Haley Portland, Oregon

Dan Haley has been a fixture in the Portland “East Side Sound scene” since he formed Ed & The Boats in the 80’s. After stints in Germany and Vermont, Dan has returned to Portland where he is still an indispensable sideman to local legends like Billy Kennedy, Jimmy Boyer, and Tim Acott when he isn't playing his own brand of "fab-rustic art-pop." ... more
